MWI Transformations – The July Before & After

As part of my continuing series of before/after photos of design projects we’ve worked on, this month I decided to show you the Living Room of a sun-filled Fifth Avenue apartment that we completed in late 2010. In March, I shared with you the  re-do of  the  Nursery in this residence – from dark and a little stiff to light and graphic….this main public room sports an equally dramatic change in style.

Our clients are wonderfully educated fans of mid-century modern furniture, and they wanted to enjoy the very best that period has to offer.  MWI designer Wendy Monette scoured the entire country for just the right pieces to re-do the apartment, and her hours of work paid off beautifully. The apartment building is a former hotel, and the existing architecture still echoed the feel of several guest rooms joined together.  We built out the living room walls to erase the vertical beams in the room (in the process gaining a corner display case ).  The floors were stripped and stained a dark ebony color , and we re-designed the radiator covers to reflect the space’s new modernity.  A custom silk rug replaces the reproduction oriental that came with the apartment.  The neutral floor covering and the greige Venetian plaster walls provide the perfect quiet backdrop to accentuate the strong lines of the Twentieth Century furniture.

For this continent-hopping family we’ve created a truly comfortable U.S.  pied-a-terre, definitely of the moment but at the same time saluting a past design period,  unlike most of the  residences on upper Fifth Avenue,  but completely at home in its surroundings….
